Tanning beds increase the risk of skin cancer by 50%

The organization Medical College of Spain (OMC) has recently published the alerting report of the European Union saying that the use of tanning beds and apparatus of artificial tanning increases the risk of skin cancer by 50%.

The Secretary-General of the OMC, Juan José Sendín Rodríguez, claimed that the report of the Scientific Committee of consumer products of the European Commission was aimed to raise awareness of people using tanning beds and warn against exposure to the sun.

According to this specialist, in the coming years it is expected to provide more definitive reports on the relation between the growth of melanomas (skin cancer) and the use of tanning beds.

Sendín stressed that the use of these devices and also overexposure to the sun may increase the risk of melanoma skin and amelanotic eye.

The OMC emphasizes that the risk is greater for people with skin and fototypes i and ii, who have difficulties in getting brown, as well as people with freckles and many birthmarks. They all should refrain from artificial tanning.

With regard to the beneficial effects of the Sun, Sendín said that in countries with a climate like Spain there is enough sunlight throughout the year, so there is no need to go to tanning salons to obtain the necessary amount of Vitamin D.

According to the Secretary General of OMC, the benefit of being tanned is the feeling of being beautiful. He pointed out that it probably would be better to use tanning cosmetics, as the sun is the leading cause of aging skin.
